Michael Howarth, 30, is from Burnley, Lancashire.

He started motorcycle racing in 2004 after his career as a Rugby League player for Oldham and Wigan was ended by a serious ankle injury.   Indeed, he was about to sign a big league contact when the injury occurred.

Michael entered in the 2004 season, riding a Ducati in the New Era Sound Of Thunder series, winning at both Cadwell Park and Silverstone and finishing third overall.

In 2006 he was knocked off his bike at Snetterton which left him in hospital for four days.   But being Michael, he was so determined to get back on his bike that after just two weeks, he managed to walk again - in the hospital swimming pool.

However, worse was to come when Michael was very badly injured at the British Super Bike Championship in 2007.  During the warm up at Brands Hatch, Michael crashed at 150mph on the out lap, and his leg was very badly broken.

This year, Michael has been training extremely hard - physically and psychologically, and aims to win the Super Bike Cup.
